House Of Trade Winds

Creating a sense of intimacy within a 900-square-metre residence was the defining challenge of this Caribbean home. Rather than celebrating scale, the ambition was to design a retreat that remained warm, personal and effortless to live in—a place where family life, hospitality and privacy could coexist naturally.

Designed for a Dutch-Canadian family with a passion for contemporary art, the architecture embraces a gallery-like serenity. Expansive walls, generous volumes and carefully framed views provide space for the collection, while the interior remains deeply connected to everyday living. Independent guest and staff quarters were seamlessly integrated into the plan, allowing privacy without disrupting the continuity of the home.

The island’s tropical climate shaped the project from the outset. Hurricanes, demanding building regulations and an unreliable power supply required a resilient architectural approach. Hurricane-resistant glazing, solar panels, battery storage and carefully integrated technical systems ensure comfort and continuity, even under extreme conditions. Here, sustainability and resilience are not separate ambitions but fundamental parts of the design.

The project also demanded resilience during construction. Built throughout the pandemic, every site visit involved complex travel restrictions and quarantine measures. Specialist craftsmen and technical expertise were frequently brought in from abroad to achieve the level of precision the project required. The calm simplicity of the finished home is therefore the result of years of coordination, craftsmanship and perseverance.

One of the home's defining features is Studio Drift's interactive light installation, which subtly responds to movement, creating a quiet dialogue between architecture and its occupants.

Ultimately, the true luxury of this residence lies not in its size, but in the atmosphere it creates. From the mirrored pivot door, the eye is drawn across the infinity pool towards the Caribbean Sea. As daylight shifts across the water, the house becomes a place of calm, privacy and quiet permanence, where architecture enhances everyday life rather than competing with it.
