Grand Gestures
A renovation of an apartment in a listed building becomes a living showcase of how art, design and nature bring out the best in each other.
With 300 square meters of space and ceilings reaching four meters high, the apartment's renovation called for grand gestures. Renovating a large, old building with a focus on retaining its soul while adding contemporary comfort is especially rewarding, says Kolenik. A two-meter wide vertical pivot door, almost like a moveable wall connects the master bedroom to the bathroom. Walls are clad in Tundra, a charcoal-colored, cement-based plaster, using it in tile form with solid brass strips. “This material, made mostly of natural components, combined with brass strips, creates a super chic effect.” An eleven-meter long Kabinet cupboard extends from the master bedroom into the dressing room. “This cabinet wall, seamlessly set into the wall, creates a peaceful atmosphere,” Kolenik notes. The Kolenik Cabinet system includes Ecoboard, an eco-friendly MDF alternative, and Solar Onyx insert cupboards made from recycled solar panel glass. Semi-transparent inserts look like pure white onyx and are perfect for displaying watches or jewelry, illuminated by warm LED lighting.
Artwork plays a significant role in the apartment. “This was a key requirement from the client,” Kolenik says. The apartment features line art by Maja Krstic and abstract works by Ming, giving it an eclectic allure that resonates with the client. The apartment boasts numerous sustainable features, including upcycled solar panels for the worktop and a custom-designed, U-shaped walk-in closet with walnut-finished doors made from recycled materials. Nature inspired the design, evident in the playful use of natural materials and the walls' subtle colors, which change with the time of day. A centrally positioned fireplace connects the dining and lounge areas, enhancing the space's warmth and cohesion. Luxurious living extends to the roof terrace, featuring an outdoor kitchen, cinema, and lounge area, making it an ideal spot for family gatherings and entertaining. The rooftop even supports local wildlife, with a beehive for bees from the nearby park.
